One-offs

One-offs

If you haven’t tried Garrett Popcorn you are missing out!  I am truly obsessed with this popcorn and it is available for purchase online in case you do not have a store in your area.  The “Chicago Mix” is the best.  It is a combination of cheese and caramel mixed together.

I’ve visited many places claiming their popcorn is as good as Garrett but none have come close.  I do not know what their secret ingredients are, nor do I care.  Just keep it coming!

Utilizing Your Local Library

Utilizing Your Local Library

If you are strapped for cash and cannot afford the newest book by your favorite author, or want to see a movie, or even want to play a board game, your library may have the solution.  Libraries now offer such an array of services and using those services has never been easier.

Back when I was in grade school, I only went to the library when I had to do research for a project or paper.  Now I’m there weekly taking advantage of all they have to offer.

First, find your local library online and go to their website.  You can see the latest events happening, hours, new books coming in and more.  You can also create an account once you have a library card.  You can search for any item to see if any libraries in the system carry it as well as requesting that item.  When you request an item, it is sent to your local or “home” library for you to pick up.  They even notify you once it comes in.  Talk about service!  You can also track your “reading history” which will list everything you check out.

If you are quick to request a newer movie, chances are you will receive it within 1-2 weeks of it coming out on DVD.  Same goes with new books.  Not too shabby for a free service.

Some libraries have video games, free access to Ancestry.com, free internet access, reading contests, and book clubs.  My library even puts you on a list for automatic holds for your favorite author’s new books.  So dust off your old library card today!

Women Under Attack

Women Under Attack

I am beyond fed up with what has been going on in politics and in the media recently.  It seems that women are under attack from everyone lately.  You have the republican presidential candidates speaking about birth control, Rush Limbaugh calling a young woman a “slut” and “prostitute” for advocating for birth control insurance coverage and Susan G. Komen for the Cure pulling funding to Planned Parenthood.  Let’s not forget these morons who were talking about putting an aspirin between your legs.  Why not suggest women jump up and down to shake out the semen?  It is ludicrous.  But I digress…

I know some will disagree with me when I say that men, who can never get pregnant, never have an abortion, never give birth, never have to have periods, have ZERO say in what goes on with a woman’s body or the rights she has to do as she chooses to it.  Unfortunately this country has always been run by men.  So it is up to women to stand up for their rights when hate-mongers such as Rush Limbaugh try to publicly tear down women.  Let me clear up a few things that I feel are common sense.

1. Some women are on birth control for health reasons such as the breaking down of potentially cancerous cysts, less painful periods, reduction in growths in breasts, iron deficiency and more.  Some women are responsibly on birth control because they just do not want to become pregnant.  Plain and simple.  It does not mean they are having a ton of sex, or they are “sluts”, it means they are being smart and responsible with their bodies.

2. Why are there people against birth control when there are a ridiculous amount of children who are unwanted in this world?  I often hear people say “they can have the baby then put it up for adoption”.  Who pays for the doctor’s visits for the mother?  Who pays for the birth?  What if no one adopts that baby?  What if they go from foster home to foster home and are abused or neglected or worse?  What if they go their whole childhood in the system?  Who pays for that?  Is that really better?

3. If Viagra is covered by insurance I do not understand the argument with insurance covering the pill.  And the pill has actual health benefits.

4. Planned Parenthood is a vital organization, especially in poorer areas so women have access to the education and services that they don’t have access to ordinarily or cannot afford.  Planned Parenthood offers cancer screenings, STD testing, contraception and more.

5. I saved the best for last.  Ms. Patricia Heaton…you are a woman AND a mother AND a disgrace to both everywhere.  How can you set the example for your kids that it is okay to verbally attack (bully) someone for trying to speak to Congress on what they believe?  How can you defend what Rush said about her?

I am tired of the nonsense.  I am all about free speech.  What I am not about is using slander, bullying, and insults to get your point across especially when you are privileged enough to have a public platform and use it to do just that.  Those that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones!  Believe it or not, politicians, Limbaugh, Heaton, O’Reilly, you can get your point across without being hateful.

I am grateful to all the sponsors of Rush’s show that have pulled their ads, however, I think Clear Channel needs to do more.  Honestly, I think Rush should be fired.  Here’s why.

Don Imus, remember him?  On his show, he referred to a black female basketball team as “nappy head hoes” and was fired.  Rick Sanchez was fired for saying “Yeah, very powerless people. [laughs] He’s such a minority. I mean, you know, please. What—are you kidding? I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart. And to imply that somehow they, the people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority?”

Tony Kornheiser, co-star of the popular ESPN show “Pardon the Interruption,” was suspended last year for making disparaging remarks on his local radio show about “SportsCenter” host Hannah Storm’s wardrobe.  Juan Williams was fired from NPR following comments he made about how muslims made him uncomfortable on a plane.  The lists go on and on.

Women have worked too hard and have come too far to allow this nonsense to continue.  Us women must stick together and stand up for our rights and if men want to support us in this mission, bravo!
