Things My Generation Has Witnessed

My generation has witnessed some amazing things.  I’m only 32 so I can’t wait to see what else is in the pipeline.  Although a lot of what we have witnessed are tragedies, it was often a fantastic sight to see how we as a country pulled through it together.  Here’s the things that stand out in my mind:

The internet!  Who could’ve imagined a world before the internet?  Soon after the internet was born, Google came along and took over the online space.

September 11th, 2001.  Arguably the greatest tragedy this nation has ever seen.  It was also a time filled with sensational “journalism”.  The disgusting treatment of the media on this event made me change my college major from Journalism.  I just couldn’t be a part of something that glorified death and terrorism.  The plus side was how the country and world came together to grieve, to love, to support to repair all that had been broken.  American flags flew everywhere you looked and the camaraderie could be felt all over.  Troops were sent to Afghanistan where they still are today.

President Barack Obama is elected.  Twice.  How awesome that we as a country have come so far as to elect a black president.  Pretty amazing.  I’m hoping to witness a female President in the near future.  Then we will have really made some progress.

Gay marriage is legalized.  One state at a time.  This was a huge achievement for human rights and hopefully will continue to be passed.

Death of Princess Diana.  We learned just how insane the paparazzi can be and the lengths they will go to grab a photo.

Death of Michael Jackson.  An icon in the music industry dies and music will never be the same.

“i”.  The ipod, the iphone, the ipad.  All things i are created and technology takes a front row seat in people’s lives like never before.

Hurricane Katrina.  A natural disaster that destroyed most of New Orleans that caused many to question the support and rebuilding the government did or did not provide.

Columbine.  A high school shooting and attack that took place at the hands of two disturbed boys in 1999.  This hit home since I was in high school at the time. The shooters killed themselves after destroying the lives of so many.  This event sparked much debate around bullying, violent video games and music and gun control.

Enron scandal.  Falsifying documents saying they were making millions when in fact they were bankrupt.  Prison sentences were handed out.

Housing crisis.  Banks were handing out loans to people left and right who ultimately could not afford to pay them back.  This combined with the depression caused people to foreclose on their homes.

Pluto isnt a planet.  A group of astronomers that name objects in space made some discoveries and voila, Pluto is voted out of the planets.

Cloning of animals.  It began with a sheep and now they are onto other animals.  Just wait, people will be next.

Government funded health care.  Fairly recent passing of Obamacare.  We shall see how it all pans out.

Legalizing of marijuana.  Some states have legalized marijuana, not just for medicinal purposes but for recreation too.

Elementary school shooting.  Sandy Hook Elementary School had a shooting where a 20 year old male walked in and began firing.  This was especially shocking because it involved young children.

Mars Rover.  A motorized robot that landed on Mars and has gathered a ton of data and pictures from this planet.

OJ Simpson Trial.  A circus of a televised criminal case involving police chases, leather gloves and so much more with an outcome where many believe the defendant got away with murder.

Facebook is launched.  Say goodbye to productivity at work.

2000.  We survived the millennium, Y2K, the world ending.  We made it.

BP Oil Spill.  200 million gallons of crude oil contaminated the Gulf of Mexico.  This was the worst spill in US history and was ultimately the result of a cover up.

Monica Lewinsky/President Clinton scandal.  President Clinton was accused of having sexual relations with his intern, Monica Lewinsky.  A ton of media coverage and the possibility of impeachment caused this to be a high profile scandal.

Reality Television.  It began with The Real World, an MTV creation and blew up into what it is today which is just about anyone, anywhere can have a show for any reason.

What’s next?  Robot waiters, cars that drive themselves, another world war, eye scan identification?  One can only wait and see…
